Religion in Meadville

There are approximately 34 churches found with an actual address of Meadville, PA which cover all faiths (according to a list from the Meadville Chamber of Commerce). Some of the various churches include: Evangelical - Jehovah's Witnesses - Methodist - Episcopal - Baptist - Luthern - Catholic - Presbyterian

 

Church History in Meadville PA

 

  • The first ministers to preach within the bounds of Crawford County were the Rev. Elisha McCurdy and Rev. Joseph Stockton in 1799.

 

  • In 1800 the first organized church in Meadville was the Presbyterian Church on 890 Liberty Street. The Rev Joseph Stockton at age 21, served at the first permanent minister in the town.

 

  • While the church was being erected services were held in homes and public buildings such as the courthouse.

 

  • The Presbyterian Church was open to all religious groups and often called the “Brick Church.” This building could seat approximately 500 people making it one of the most outstanding buildings in this part of Pennsylvania.

 

 

In 1825 other denominations were being established.

 

 

  • 1825 Unitarian Universalist Church at 346 Chestnut Street. This church was designed to resemble a Greek Revival structure. A donor of financial support was an eminent Greek Scholar.

 

  • 1842 St. Paul’s United Church of Christ at 1070 Park Avenue. This was known as the German Reformed Church of Meadville.

 

  • 1849 St. Agatha’s Roman Catholic Church at 1025 South Main Street. This was the first Roman Catholic church in town. It was of German descent. In 1866, St. Agatha’s School was built, which later became known as Seton School.

 

  • 1850 Bethel A.M.E. Church at 961 Liberty Street. This was known as the Bethel African Methodist Church. It was started with five charter members.

 

  • 1862 St. Brigid’s Roman Catholic Church at 383 Arch Street. The congregation was of Irish descent.

  • Love, INC.(In the Name of Christ): As a Christian operation, Love, INC. works with public and private sector organizations to provide basic needs such as food, clothing, furniture, housing, transportation, and financial aid. First Church provides aid to the community through referrals from Love, INC.

 

  • Habitat for Humanity: Provides low cost housing for qualifying families. First Church provides financial support for the building of new homes for Habitat in Crawford County. Many members are involved as board members of Habitat and in the actual construction of the new homes.

 

  • Stephen Ministry: Individual church members receive specialized training to assist other members in dealing with difficult life circumstances. If you know of someone who has experienced a loss, is facing a crisis in his/her life, or needs a listening presence as he/she struggles with life challenges.

 

  • Meadville Area Free Clinic: The clinic provides free health services to those who have found it difficult, if not impossible, to obtain medical insurance. The deacons have extended themselves in support of this important community service as a form of ministry outreach.

I think your page is done nicely--the pictures are beautiful. I like how you gave the history of the church groups in Meadville as well as the current ones and I especially like that you included the service organizations like Habitat for Humanity. Good work!
