Meadville Collaborative Community Project

As a community already divided by miles and brought together by online technology, participants in this Wiki will experience being a part of a community of learners as they learn to assess a community defined by geographic boundaries.

Authors of this Wiki are graduate nursing students enrolled in what was the joint Clarion, Edinboro, and Slippery Rock Universities MSN Program (now the Clarion and Edinboro Universities MSN Program). To learn more about our program, please visit http://www.clarion.edu/msn, (while noting the change in the collaborative members!)

Students enrolled in the program share a common bond as registered nurses; as they progress in their graduate studies they take on new identities as nurse educators or family nurse practitioners. The Collaborative Community Study project prepares them as nurse leaders able to design plans to improve the health of the communities where they live.

The current project is in its infancy. Since our students predominately come from Western Pennsylvania, a single community--Meadville, Pennsylvania--was selected as the focus of this initial effort. Communities will continue to be added. Visit the newest projects: a community study for Vandergrift, Pennsylvania at http://614comm2.pbwiki.com/FrontPage and a guide to differential diagnosis being developed by our family nurse practitioner students (link to follow soon!)

Student authors will not only collect and post data regarding the population and the community, but will use the information off-line to:

  • Formulate a data summary that identifies health strengths and health risk profiles based on the community assessment data
  • Design a plan to improve and/or mobilize primary health care services based on the community health strengths and health risk profiles

To see how we'll go about this, begin by viewing the slide presentation Community Assessment.
